From Fr. Tom's pastor's Notes 6/20/10...

The clergy sex abuse scandal in the Church has made me angry, sad, disappointed, upset—all at the same time. Stupid & foolish things said by some Church leaders makes it all worse, leading many lay people to think it is all the fault of the secular media & lawyers. I appreciate the recent thinking of Pope Benedict: the fuss is not due to the media or lawyers; it is the result of deep sinfulness in the Church & radical reform is needed. I have found a wonderful treatment of the topic in the July- August issue of “Catholic Digest.” I asked the staff how best to share it with you & they suggest I use it at Sunday Masses this summer & again in the fall. Many of you get Catholic Digest—would you mind bringing it to Church when finished with it so that I may have copies when I use it with the assembly this summer? Thank you for doing this. It’s a tough topic. I had to testify in court about a priest suspected of abuse. It was one of the hardest things I’ve done. Please pray for the Holy Spirit to guide & strengthen me as I prepare to talk about the scandal soon.

Catholic Digest asked 38 crucial questions about the clergy sex abuse crisis responded to by e-mail by Teresa Kettelkamp, executive director of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Secretariat of Child and Youth Protection. Twenty-four questions were featured in the magazine; CLICK HERE for remaining ones (38 total).
