The December meeting of the LCCW began just after 7 PM on December 11, 2007.

Patty Evans opened the meeting with the Prayer in honor of Our Lady of Good Counsel.

Then we watched a video that Harveen Gluf purchased at the National meeting.  It was titled DYING TO LIVE. The subject was illegal immigration which is high on the National Conference of Catholic Bishops agenda. The Latin Americans are living in poverty and have no hope of getting out. That is how they come to the decision to try to get into our country for a good paying job.  They have strong family ties so it is a gut wrenching decision. It is also a very dangerous trip and many are turned back and try several times before they are successful.  In the end many are dying for a chance at a dignified life.

Mary Lou Mulligan read the minutes from the November meeting.  Minutes were approved as read.

Joan Langford gave the Treasurer's report.  The opening balance was $4004.50.  After bills for a Nativity set, dues to the National and Diocesan offices, and other expenses as well as receipts from the cookie sale the ending balance was $4563.55.  The report was approved as read.

CORRESPONDENCE

We received several thank yous from people who received gifts from us and from the Mary Jane Brown Home thanking us for our participation in the monthly birthday party program.

OLD BUSINESS

Patty Evans wanted to make a note in the minutes regarding the number served at the Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service.  It was agreed that the number was more than 60 and that in the future we would need at about 9 pans of bars.

The Winterfest Cookie Sale netted about $2100.

Harveen chaired the Christmas Shut-in program.  Gifts were delivered to the nursing homes, the Oaks and to those on Father Tom's communion list.

Lynn Richters reported that Harold Wohlford offered to donate a used computer to the Mary Jane Brown Home.

Three soldiers in Iraq received Christmas gifts from our group.  Harveen chaired this activity and will see to Tyler Scheidt receiving a birthday gift in January.

NEW BUSINESS

Father Tom talked to Joan about the LCCW buying an outdoor Nativity scene.  She and Patty agreed that this would be possible and Joan has already purchased a set.  The purchase was approved.

Father Tom asked Mary Lou  if the LCCW could buy a poinsettia for each family who suffered the loss of a member during this year.  He would write a card to go with each plant.  It would be part of the ministry to the grieving that the Social Ministry Committee is starting.  The purchase was approved.

There was a discussion of the rules for the kitchen regarding responsibility for the cleaning of towels following a meal event.  The person in charge of the meal should see that the towels are laundered and returned to the drawers from which they were taken.  Sue Buffington will purchase a dozen dishcloths at the Hospital gift shop.  Pat Ahrendt purchased feed sack dishtowels and marked them with a ST. C for use in the kitchen.

We discussed Christmas gifts for the church staff.  We will give gift certificates for restaurants to Father Tom in the total amount of $100.  We will give checks to Mary, Katie, Jackie and Lowell in the amount of $50 each.

COMMISSION REPORTS

Sue Buffington gave Respect Life Commission report.  She thanked everyone for the gifts that were brought to the meeting for the Helping Hands Pregnancy Center in Worthington.  She will try to deliver them next week.  The cloning bill, which was introduced in Congress, did not pass.  Catholic Woman magazine had a very nice article explaining that abortion is a social problem distinguished from all others by its serious consequences.  She has some magnets for putting on bathroom doors here at the church.  She would like more of them and may contact Catholic Charities about getting them.  The baby bottle collection for Helping Hands Pregnancy Center will take place on January 19th and 20th.  Sue will contact Gina Newman about singing that weekend with her daughters.

Patty adjourned the meeting with the Hail Mary.  After which she served two delicious desserts to the rest of us.
