Luverne LCCW
Minutes
May 5, 2010
On May 5, 2010 several
members of the LCCW enjoyed a trip to the St. Francis House in Sioux Falls.
Julie Pick Becker, who grew up in Luverne and whose parents still belong to our
parish, is the director and she gave us a tour of the facility. It is a complex
of 4 buildings, which house up to 80 people at any one time. Some of these are
single men and women and some are families. She manages a staff of 11 people.
Those using the facility are expected to work to contribute to their own
support. Part of each of their paychecks is banked. Their personal items are
furnished, as is their bedding. They perform chores around the building. They
are tested for drugs and alcohol periodically. They may not stay there more
than a year and while they are there they work on improving their lifestyle and
job skills.
Following the tour, we
drove to the Brandon Steakhouse for dinner. We had a short informal meeting
there.
We discussed making a
donation to the Mary Jane Brown Home to help defray the cost of the
refreshments that they serve following each monthly Mass. We decided on giving
them $100. Mary Lou Mulligan will hand deliver a thank you card with the money
enclosed. She will bring this item up again next spring.
Mary Aaker, Helen Saum and
Rosie Paquette will chair the Salad Luncheon on June 10 this year.
Norma Stewart and Harveen
Gluf advised us that we have been offered the opportunity to serve lunch at the
Art Rocks event in August. They will do some more research on the event and see
if it will work for us. It was thought that we might be able to sell barbecue sandwiches
because we froze the filling that was left from the Pike auction. Joan said we
cleared about $500 on that event.
Norma and Harveen also spoke about the Diocesan Conference of CCW, which will take place in Adams, MN this year on October 9. They said it is a leadership forum with a lot of good ideas for topics at meetings and projects for missions and the like. They hope that it will be well attended by our group.
